Eurostar Luggage Rules: What You Can and Can't Bring
One of the biggest advantages of the Eurostar over flying is the generous luggage policy. No weigh-ins, no checked bag fees, and no worrying about liquid restrictions. Here's everything you need to know.
Standard Luggage Allowance
Every Eurostar passenger can bring:
- 2 pieces of luggage (max 85cm length each)
- 1 piece of hand luggage (handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack)
- Total of 3 items per person
There are no weight limits — as long as you can carry your own bags, you're fine.
Size Restrictions
Each piece of luggage must not exceed:
- 85cm in length in any dimension
- This is roughly the size of a large suitcase or rucksack
Your hand luggage item should be small enough to fit under your seat or on the overhead rack.
Where to Store Your Bags
- Overhead racks above seats for smaller bags
- Luggage racks at the ends of each carriage for larger suitcases
- Under-seat space for hand luggage
Pro tip: Arrive early to secure space on luggage racks, especially during busy periods. There's no assigned luggage storage, so it's first come, first served.
What You CAN Bring
Unlike airlines, Eurostar allows:
- Liquids of any size — water bottles, wine, full-size toiletries
- Food and drinks — pack a picnic if you like
- Musical instruments in a case (counts as one luggage item)
- Pushchairs and prams — folded, in addition to your allowance
- Skis and snowboards — in a bag, during winter season
What You CAN'T Bring
Prohibited items include:
- Firearms and weapons
- Flammable liquids and gases
- Sharp objects (large knives, etc.)
- Fireworks and explosives
- Hover boards and e-scooters with large batteries
Travelling with Bikes
- Folding bikes are allowed if folded and in a bag
- Non-folding bikes must be disassembled and in a bike bag (max 120cm)
- Eurostar does not currently offer dedicated bike spaces on most services
Special Items
- Pets: Only guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted
- Sports equipment: Golf bags and ski equipment are allowed (count toward your luggage limit)
- Wheelchairs: Carried free of charge with assistance available
Packing Tips for Eurostar Travel
- Use a backpack-style bag for easy carrying through stations
- Label your luggage — racks are shared, and bags can look similar
- Keep valuables in your hand luggage on your person
- Pack light if doing a day trip — a single backpack is ideal
- Remember: no lockers at Gare du Nord — you'll carry everything with you
The freedom of Eurostar's luggage policy is a game-changer. Pack what you need, skip the baggage carousel, and enjoy a hassle-free journey.
